4 Fascinating Facts about Mirrors from Our Bakersfield Glass Shop

Although we may take it for granted as we look into mirrors every morning during our daily routines, there’s actually something a bit magical about how light passes through the glass and is reflected back by the metal components within it. And while mirrors might seem commonplace and perhaps even mundane, they have played an important role in modern and ancient history. At Bakersfield Glass & Window, we’re passionate about our field and love learning more about it. Our local glass shop provides expert mirror sales and installations in the greater Bakersfield area. Here's a look at four interesting facts about mirrors.
The World’s Largest Human-Made Mirror
At the University of Arizona, the Giant Magellan Telescope is being built and is scheduled to be operational by 2029. It will be set up in South America’s Atacama Desert, where it will enable astronomers to look far off into the cosmos. At completion, it will have seven mirrored segments that combine to form a mirror surface that is 82 feet in diameter. Its designers say that its resolution will be ten times greater than the Hubble, four times greater than the James Webb, and 200 times more powerful than any comparable telescope that is Earth-based.
The Biggest Naturally Formed Mirror
Salar de Uyuni is a 4,000 square mile salt flat in Bolivia that forms the biggest natural mirror on the planet. It breathtakingly reflects the expansive sky, making it a hotspot for photographers.
The Ancient Roman Mirror Myth
You may have heard of the old-time myth that you’ll get seven years of bad luck if you break a mirror. This comes from the ancient Romans. In their society, they believed that if you break a mirror, it would damage your soul and life, which could only be renewed in seven-year intervals.
Evaluating Animal Intelligence
Scientists use the mirror test to help determine animals’ intelligence via self-awareness. Animals that have shown they recognize themselves in mirrors include orangutans, pigs, orcas, and magpies.
